Carnauba Wax- Composition and Uses

Carnauba wax is derived from the leaves of a plant found in the northeast states of Brazil. The plant is known as Copernicus Prunifera plant. Carnauba wax is also known as ‘Queen of Wax’. The wax is derived after the leaves of the plant are dried and beaten. With this, the plant extracts a yellow brown wax. It is first refined and bleached before use. After this, the wax is melted at the temperature of about 172 degree Fahrenheit, to make it durable. Uses The wax is used as a major ingredient in automobile waxes, shoe polishes, dental floss, floor waxing and also as an instrument wax.

The wax is also used for coating pills and paper. It possesses shining and hypoallergic properties due to which it is also used as an ingredient in cosmetic products like Lipsticks, mascara, eye liner and eye shadow among others. It is also used as a vegetarian alternative to Gelatin. It is highly resistant to water which makes it durable. It is also mixed with dyes, to make other durable polishes. It is also used in many industries as a finishing agent.

It is also made up of fatty alcohols, acids and hydrocarbons. All these ingredients exist in almost perfect quantity, which needs no or little refining.
